Hi, I’m Diana.
Growing up, there was a familiar exchange around my things.
If someone liked my bathing suit, a purse, a jacket, or a piece of jewelry, I’d say, “Thanks, my mom made it.” Over time, people stopped asking. One of my best friends used to laugh and say, “Did your mom make that?” anytime I had something new.
Most of the time, she had.
My mom has always described herself as an artist, and that feels right. She is hands-on, creative, and completely comfortable making things from scratch. For a bathing suit, instead of choosing from what was available in a store, we’d go to the fabric shop and pick exactly what I wanted. Halloween costumes were always homemade. Jewelry, purses, embroidered jackets. If we could imagine it, she could figure out how to make it.
What stayed with me wasn’t just that things were handmade. It was the process behind them. There was thought in them, time in them, and a kind of care you could feel. Wearing something that came from those moments made it feel different.
That way of working carried on as I got older. Even in college, when there was a themed event, I’d call my mom and say, “Okay, here’s the theme.” And we’d start thinking through it.
That’s really what my mom gave me. A comfort with making. A sense that creativity is approachable, and that loving beautiful things often starts with being part of how they’re made. Now that I’m a mom, I hope to do the same for my daughter. I want her to feel capable, curious, and confident to dream up ideas of her own. To come home excited about something she’s imagined, ready to work on it together.
This site is where I keep track of the things I make and how I make them. I hope it gives other moms a little more confidence to create those kinds of moments and things for their own daughters along the way.
